Itinerary

Arrive in Queensland’s vibrant capital and settle into your central accommodation. Spend your afternoon exploring the Botanic Gardens, strolling along South Bank, or enjoying the buzz of Queen Street Mall. This evening, enjoy a relaxed dinner at one of Brisbane’s many riverside restaurants.

Depart Toowoomba and journey through the heart of the Darling Downs towards Roma, known for its cattle history and country charm. On arrival, consider joining the optional Explore Roma Tour, where you’ll discover the area’s oil and gas heritage, the impressive Big Rig, and learn about local Indigenous history.

Enjoy a free day to explore Roma at your own pace. Stroll through the Roma Bush Gardens, visit the Big Rig Interpretive Centre**, or simply relax and soak up the local charm. For those wanting to explore further, Boobook Explore offers two optional full-day tours. The Lost World Carnarvon Ranges tour** is a 4WD adventure through remote Wallaroo Station, revealing ancient cycad groves, dramatic rock formations, Aboriginal art sites, and sweeping views of the Arcadia Valley. Or consider the Landscape & Legacy in Roma tour**, which uncovers the region’s history and ecology, including a picnic lunch at Mt Abundance on Massey Downs Station. Both optional tours offer an unforgettable window into Queensland’s natural and cultural heritage.

Depart Roma this morning and head west through wide open country, perhaps stopping for a break at historic Hotel Corones in Charleville, a true outback icon. Continue to the opal town of Quilpie and explore the local art gallery and museum at the Visitor Information Centre. Then travel a further 50 minutes to Toogunna Plains Farmstay, a 130,000-acre, working sheep and cattle property. Check into your deluxe ensuite hut and meet your station hosts. This afternoon, consider booking the optional Kyra Sandhills at Sunset Tour** for sweeping Channel Country views. Tonight, start with a relaxed wine & cheese platter, then cook up your paddock-to-plate BBQ dinner before gathering around the firepit under a brilliant night sky.

Begin your day with a hearty cooked breakfast in the Bush Kitchen, followed by an included three-hour station tour hosted by your grazier guide. Explore key landmarks across this expansive 5th-generation sheep and cattle property, including abandoned homesteads, oil fields, shearing sheds, and natural geological formations. Learn about the station’s pastoral heritage and day-to-day operations and enjoy a delicious home-baked morning tea.  
In the afternoon, you may like to take a short 20-minute drive to the Eromanga Natural History Museum, for the optional Australian Dinosaur Giants Tour**. See the immersive Deep Time Dinosaur Today multimedia presentation, then tour the working fossil laboratory and collection room, where you’ll come face to face with Australia’s largest dinosaur. An onsite café is available at the Museum to purchase refreshments and lunches. Return to Toogunna Plains Farmstay early afternoon.

Depart Toogunna Plains Farmstay and head back through Quilpie town on your way to Cunnamulla. Consider calling in to the famous Toompine Pub, known as the ‘pub without a town,’ for a quick break and a taste of true outback hospitality. Continue to the quirky town of Eulo, often called the ‘Montville of the Outback.’ Learn the colourful story behind the legendary Eulo Queen—an opal trader and eccentric local icon—at the historic Eulo Queen Hotel. Then browse the town shops for local opals, handcrafted leather goods, and delicious locally made honey. Don’t forget to snap a selfie with Kenny, the life-size Diprotodon—a giant megafauna fossil discovered nearby. Later, arrive in Cunnamulla and check into the historic Club Boutique hotel, steeped in early pastoral heritage. This evening, relax and enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Enjoy a free day to explore the unique outback town of Cunnamulla. Start with your included visit to All Aboard Cunnamulla (seasonal), where a cheeky holographic Station Master shares tall tales, local legends, and rail history in a captivating 3D sound and light show. You may also like to visit the Artesian Time Tunnel at the Cunnamulla Fella Centre, featuring a simulated mine lift and interactive exhibits. Meet Doug the Rigger and uncover the fascinating opal mining heritage and natural wonders of the Great Artesian Basin. In the afternoon, unwind at the Cunnamulla Hot Springs with a soak in the geothermal mineral pools, fed by rejuvenating artesian waters (own arrangements).

Depart Cunnamulla and drive east toward St George, travelling through the small town of Bollon. Stop at the Nullawokka First Nations Gallery to browse Indigenous artworks and ethically sourced Australian-made products—a meaningful glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage. Continue to St George, dubbed Queensland’s inland fishing capital, set along the banks of the Balonne River. Visit the Unique Egg, home to an extraordinary collection of hand-carved, illuminated emu eggs. You may also like to visit Riversands Wines, Queensland’s most western vineyard, for a relaxed optional lunch, and wine tasting in a tranquil garden setting. This evening, consider joining a sunset nature cruise on the Balonne River to farewell the outback in style.

Depart St George this morning and travel east along the Moonie Highway toward Cecil Plains, passing through quiet farming country and cotton fields. From here, follow the more direct route via the Toowoomba Bypass, offering scenic views across the Great Dividing Range or you may choose to break your journey in Toowoomba. Continue along the Warrego Highway for your final stretch back to Brisbane.
